VP Selection Coming Soon. Kamala Harris is Still the Favorite But Biden has Lots of Talented Choices
Aaron Blake of the Washington Post has a new piece sizing up Joe Biden's choices for Vice-President. The first thing that jumps out at you is that Biden has a wealth of talented women to choose from. The Democratic Party has done an admirable job in recruiting women candidates for public office over the last few decades and it shows.
Sen. Kamala Harris is still the favorite and she is probably the safe choice because she has high name recognition nationally and has the experience and credentials to step in immediately if Biden is sidelined for some reason during his term of office. She's not an inspiring public speaker, but she's highly intelligent and has a firm handle on both domestic and international policy issues.
Blake does a good job of handicapping the strengths and weaknesses of the other candidates. In a perfect [and less political] world, I believe Biden would select Susan Rice as his running mate. She was President Obama's extraordinarily talented national security adviser and has the personal connections and experience to restore America's standing in the global community. Her weakness is that she doesn't have much of a domestic policy footprint, but, as Blake notes, she has tried to address that recently.
Washington Post: "This week, she authored a New York Times op-ed arguing that the George Floyd protests are a momentous opportunity, but “this incipient movement also risks being reduced to a fleeting instant of heightened consciousness, one that dissipates in the fog of pandemic, economic recession and a bitter presidential campaign.” She added that while polls show increasing sympathy for the cause, much of the progress has “has been symbolic or superficial.” It was a high-minded plea, to be sure, but a noteworthy one from someone with one of the most impressive resumes on this list."
If Rice is passed over for Vice-President, she will certainly be on Biden's short list for Secretary of State. And, what a great team Harris and Rice would make, working to undo the damage Trump has done to America's reputation internationally.
