Today's Prepublicized Immigration Raids are About Energizing the Trump Base

After backing down Friday on adding a citizenship question to the census, Donald Trump needs to remind his base who the anti-immigrant President is. Today's raids are about reassuring the President's supporters that he will follow through on his promise to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. Many had started to worry because Trump's deportation numbers are still far below those of Bush and Obama.

The raids today are mainly a campaign stunt meant to generate a lot of publicity. How do we know that it's a stunt? You don't advertise immigration raids any more than you advertise drug raids.

Former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement John Sandweg, nailed it in an interview with NBC.

NBC: "Sandweg said in an interview Friday that the announcements were for political gain and could endanger law enforcement agents, cause felons to hide and discourage immigrants from reporting criminals."
"We've never seen anything like this," he said. "I think it's frankly inexcusable to promote this operation before it happens. It just puts the officers in danger, and completely diminishes the effectiveness of the operation itself."

ICE agents might find some undocumented families at home after publicizing the raids for weeks because they don't want to flee with their children. However, they won't find many of the criminals that should be the priority for deportation. Those folks will be long gone.

Sandweg, NBC: "I don't see any reason to publicize this operation but for political reasons," he said. "There is absolutely no operational reason, period, to publicize these raids."
