The Quote of the Week Goes to Sen Mark Warner Explaining the Trump Social Media Summit
President Trump held a summit at the White House this week to complain, without evidence, about a liberal bias by social media companies like Twitter and Facebook. Of course, because this was a Trump event, the guest list was a collection of right-wing conspiracy theorists, trolls and nitwits that have supported the President and his policies.
Google, Facebook and Twitter were not invited but received a lot of attention, mainly negative. Their efforts at limiting hate speech have not gone over well with some Trump supporters.
The event was mostly fact-free, but led to some wonderful quotes. The President gave a bizarrely twisted explanation of the first amendment.
Trump/Esquire: I don't think the mainstream media is free speech either...To me free speech is not when you see something good and then you purposefully write bad. To me that’s very dangerous speech and you become angry at it. But that’s not free speech.
Setting aside the fact that our President speaks like a fourth-grader, is he saying that only speech that supports his policies is protected?

Warner (D-Va.). “The fact that some of the most extreme voices on social media are coming to the White House, and they get a forum to complain about how often they’re retweeted, and that the actual platform companies aren’t even invited, smacks of the absurd.”
So why did the White House sponsor this event? Its simply another vehicle for the President to bash legitimate media outlets and support his online fans. He is going to need their help again in 2020.
