Stating the Obvious: Yes, it was a Coup Attempt, Mandates are Needed, & Cuomo Must Go

We can have spirited debates about taxes, defense spending, and foreign policy, but some policy issues are so obvious that there just isn't room for debate among an educated people, an enlightened populous, to paraphrase Thomas Jefferson.
1. Take, for instance, vaccination mandates. The public supports them, we know they will help eradicate the disease, and we have been requiring vaccinations for generations. So, why in the name of God are we debating sensible measures to ensure the public health? Yes, you have a right to be a moron, but your "liberty" doesn't extend to infecting other people with a deadly disease.
To be clear, legally, the government doesn't have the right to hold you down and forcibly vaccinate you, but it can mandate vaccinations before you attend school or take part in other activities in which you might infect others. So, get the shot and STFU!
2. Similarly, we now know that Donald Trump was indeed trying to overturn the 2020 election and the folks that came to Washington were part of a coup attempt, however ill conceived and executed. Luckily, the former president was just as bad at that as he was at everything else.
Conservative Washington Post columnist Max Boot published an insightful piece today on the insurrection titled, "Yes, Trump tried to stage a coup. By denying it, the right is laying the groundwork for another one." Boot lays out the evidence precisely and warns that Trump got closer to overturning the election than many realize and that some Republicans are planning for a more successful outcome in 2024.
Boot, Wash. Post: "The effort to minimize and normalize what happened on Jan. 6, in both its hard and soft variants, is laying the groundwork for a potentially more successful coup attempt the next time around. If Republicans gain control of the House and Senate in 2022 — an outcome made more likely by their gerrymandering and voter suppression — they will be in a strong position to return Trump to the White House even if he loses the 2024 election."
Those that minimize the events of 1/6/21 do so in order to cloud the record, obscure the enormity of that endeavor. What happened at the Capital on that day was a good old fashioned coup attempt, not unlike those experienced by far too many developing countries. Yes, it was poorly planned and executed, but the next one probably won't be. Unfortunately, it may be a wake-up call that too few Americans received.
3. Gov. Cuomo, it's time for you to ride off into the sunset to prevent a messy and demeaning impeachment trial. Yes, somehow Donald Trump survived more than a dozen sexual harassment and assault allegations, but his supporters aren't big on women's' rights to begin with. Your base takes sexual misconduct a bit more seriously and they want you gone. You should listen.
