Over 70 GOP National Security Officials from the Reagan and Bush Years Say Trump is "Unfit to Lead"

More than 70 senior national security officials who served in the current administration or for earlier Republican presidents going back to Ronald Reagan published a letter Thursday stating that Donald Trump is "unfit to lead" and endorsing Joe Biden for President.

The Letter: "We are former national security officials who served during the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and/or Donald Trump, or as Republican Members of Congress. We are profoundly concerned about the course of our nation under the leadership of Donald Trump. Through his actions and his rhetoric, Trump has demonstrated that he lacks the character and competence to lead this nation and has engaged in corrupt behavior that renders him unfit to serve as President."
For the following reasons, we have concluded that Donald Trump has failed our country and that Vice President Joe Biden should be elected the next President of the United States."
The New York Times: "Among the signatories are former officials from the Reagan administration; others who served both George Bush and George W. Bush; and a few, like John Negroponte, the former director of national intelligence, and Gen. Michael Hayden, who served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency and whose service extended over both Democratic and Republican administrations."

Other well known Republican foreign policy officials and office-holders who signed the letter include former Director of the CIA and FBI William Webster, former Secretary of Defense and U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, and former GOP Sen. John Warner [Pictured above].

The letter includes a scathing 10 point indictment of Trump's incompetence, corruption, and dereliction of duty. And the officials are especially harsh regarding the President's chaotic performance during the current coronavirus pandemic.

Letter: "Donald Trump has shown that he is unfit to lead during a national crisis. Instead of rallying the American people and the world to confront the coronavirus, Trump has spent the past half year spreading misinformation, undermining public health experts, attacking state and local officials, and wallowing in self-pity. He has demonstrated far greater concern about the fate of his reelection than the health of the American people."

If nothing else, the signatories want there to be a record for future historians that many Americans did understand the threat Trump poses to our democracy and our standing in the world. We were warned, and we have a choice.

Letter: "In contrast, we believe Joe Biden has the character, experience, and temperament to lead this nation. We believe he will restore the dignity of the presidency, bring Americans together, reassert America’s role as a global leader, and inspire our nation to live up to its ideals."

In reading their statement, you get the unmistakable impression that these Republican officials believe the nation is in peril and are pleading with Americans to step back from the brink.
