Nobody Even Expects Trump to be Truthful, Mature or Dignified Any Longer

Donald Trump retweeted a repulsive and juvenile conspiracy theory yesterday that former President Bill Clinton was behind the death of accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, just hours after Epstein was found dead by apparent suicide in his prison cell. It's the kind of thing that an emotionally stunted 14 year old might do to get some social media attention. You see it, wince, and wonder what the rest of the world thinks of us. We have a hateful, narcissistic, man-child as President, with the nuclear codes and no filter on his endless and vacuous prattle.
Americans hoped Trump would grow into the job of President, mature, become a dignified and serious leader that the nation could be proud of. Wow, were we wrong!
Each week is worse than the last and the nation rises each morning to some new lie, vindictive twitter rant, or racist slander. Every day on Twitter, in speeches or at rallies he blurts out nonsensical conspiracy theories and half-baked public or foreign policy ideas. Does anyone even take him seriously any more?
Long-time conservative writer, David Frum, had a wonderful piece in the Atlantic yesterday in which he argues that even those in his administration ignore and try to work around him.
The Atlantic: "By now, Trump’s party in Congress, the members of his Cabinet, and even his White House entourage all tacitly agree that Trump’s occupancy of the office held by Washington, Lincoln, FDR, and Eisenhower must be a bizarre cosmic joke, not to be taken seriously. CNN’s Jake Tapper on August 2 quoted a “senior national security official” as saying: "Everyone at this point ignores what the president says and just does their job. The American people should take some measure of confidence in that.”
However, each day that Trump is President further stains the office and damages our global standing. Just consider the last week. The President proved again his lack of anything approaching empathy by posing with an orphaned baby in El Paso with a big smile, giving us the thumbs-up. He carelessly expanded the trade war, deepening the crisis for America's farmers, and damaging the global economy, And, in foreign policy, he again exposed the dangerous fiction that he has some idea of what he is doing with N. Korea.
So, the President's suggestion yesterday that his predecessor put a hit out on Jeffrey Epstein is just another day in Trump's America. Nobody, except perhaps the QAnon folks, will believe it and many people will write it off as Trump being Trump. We don't expect him to be truthful, mature or dignified. We just hope he gets through the day without breaking all the china in the White House.
