New Poll: the Majority of Americans Now Believe Donald Trump is a Racist & a Failure as President
Some Americans have held this view since he was inaugurated, but a new survey by Yahoo! News/YouGov finds that now most of us believe that President Donald Trump is a racist. That is stunning and more than a bit depressing. Who would have ever believed that in the 21st century America would be governed by an individual that most of us think is a bigot.
When asked “do you think that President Trump is a racist”, 52% of respondents said yes, while only 34% said no. As you might expect, self-identified Democrats and Republicans differed greatly on the question, but among independents, the spread was even wider, with 53% saying Trump is a racist and only 31% saying he isn't.
The poll also asked the respondents to rate a variety of American presidents including Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, and Jimmy Carter. An astonishing 54% rated Trump either a “failure” or “below average,” with the results overwhelmingly tilted toward “failure” at 43%. To provide some context, only 12% viewed Jimmy Carter as a "failure" and no other president even approached Trump's negatives. Even the much maligned George W Bush fared better than Trump with only 13% believing his presidency was a "failure."
On the positive side of the ledger, only 30% of respondents view Trump as a "great" or "near great" president, while 45% give Barack Obama the highest marks.
And, in the head-to-head match-up this November, the survey found that former Vice-President Biden leads Trump by nine points, 49 percent to 40 percent. That 9 point advantage is similar to most of the recent national polls.
