New Poll Shows that Americans Who Live Closest to the Border Don't Like Trump's Immigration Policies

A new poll by the U.S. Immigration Policy Center at the University of California-San Diego shows that folks who live nearest the Mexican border really don't like the President's immigration and asylum policies. Researchers surveyed 2,750 residents from California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas [two red states and two blue states] from October 8 to 22 and found the majority think Trump has been far too harsh in his treatment of illegal immigrants and families seeking asylum in the United States.

56% disapprove of the way Trump has handled the border, with only 36% approving of his policies. And on specific border issues the results were even worse for the President.

US Immigration Policy Center Poll Results:

- Nearly 6 out of 10, or 58.6%, say those fleeing persecution and seeking refuge in the U.S., including women and children, should be allowed to enter the U.S. in order to ensure their safety while their asylum case is pending.

- Over 2 out of 3, or 67.1%, favor placing unaccompanied children who are caught attempting to cross the border illegally into the care of child welfare specialists, not border or immigration enforcement officials.

- Over 8 out of 10, or 83.1%, say they favor providing aid such as food and water to migrants who are attempting to cross the border illegally

The results certainly don't support the Republican narrative that those living nearest to the border are suffering because of illegal immigration and asylum requests, and thus favor harsher policies toward migrants.
