Liz Cheney Tried to Save a Party that Doesn't Want to be Saved

All but one Republican, Rep. Ken Buck of CO, walked out as Rep. Liz Cheney addressed the House of Representatives yesterday to remind her colleagues that they owe a duty to the Constitution and the rule of law.

Rep Liz Cheney: “Today, we face a threat America has never seen before. A former president who provoked a violent attack on this Capitol, in an effort to steal the election, has resumed his aggressive effort to convince Americans that the election was stolen from him.” ...
“Remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar. “I will not participate in that. I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy. Our election was not stolen, and America has not failed.”

Republican legislators are well aware of their duty, but they are addicted to Donald Trump and his lies. They can't imagine a future without him. The last thing they need is Liz Cheney droning on about honor and principles. They abandoned all that five years ago when they joined the Trump circus.

As SC Sen. Lindsey Graham explained yesterday, Trump IS the Republican Party now, so truth and fidelity to the rule of law aren't options for the GOP. Graham told Fox News, “he’s the most popular Republican in the country by a lot, If you try to drive him out of the Republican Party, half the people will leave.”

So, today Republicans voted to oust Cheney from her leadership position in the House in order to send a message to other members about adhering to Trump's "stolen election" lie, no matter how ridiculous or damaging to our democracy.
