Judge Rips Barr, Romney Slams Senate Republicans & Trump Fumbles Coronavirus Response

When the history of the Trump years is written, one of the most important story-lines will be of the brave men and women who stood up for ethical government and the rule of law.

Federal Judge Rips Barr: Yesterday, a federal judge in Washington discredited Attorney General William P. Barr’s handling of the Mueller Report, saying that Barr put forward a “distorted” and “misleading” account of the Special Counsel's findings and lacked credibility on the topic. The judge then ordered the Justice Department to provide the court with the redacted portions of the report so that he could verify their reasons for concealing them from the public.

New York Times: "The differences between the report and Mr. Barr’s description of it “cause the court to seriously question whether Attorney General Barr made a calculated attempt to influence public discourse about the Mueller report in favor of President Trump despite certain findings in the redacted version of the Mueller report to the contrary,” wrote Judge Walton, an appointee of President George W. Bush."...
..."Among those Judge Walton cited: Mr. Barr’s obfuscation about the scope of the links that investigators found between the Trump campaign and Russia, and how the report documented numerous episodes that appear to meet the criteria for obstruction of justice, echoing the complaints of many critics of Mr. Barr’s summary of the report."

Romney Slams his Republican Senate colleagues: Some Republicans in the Senate want to re-open the investigation of Hunter Biden's business dealings in Ukraine in order to damage the candidacy of his father, former Vice-President Joe Biden. It is a brazen, cynical, and corrupt political ploy, but one Republicans used successfully against Hillary Clinton in 2016. Republican Sen. Mitt Romney gave the game away yesterday.

New York Times: "Some Republicans have privately voiced discomfort about the effort. On Thursday, Senator Mitt Romney, Republican of Utah and a member of the Homeland Security Committee, told reporters that there was “no question” that “looking into Burisma and Hunter appears political.” He said he was not yet sure if he would support the subpoena."

The whole Biden/Ukraine thing has been investigated before and there is absolutely no evidence of wrongdoing. Of course, that won't stop Fox News from treating it as a legitimate inquiry. And, expect to hear all kinds of new Biden conspiracy theories on right-wing talk radio as the Fall election approaches.

Trump fumbles Coronavirus response: Donald Trump could have let the experts in the medical and scientific communities handle his administration's coronavirus planning and messaging, but that would have been way too responsible for our wildly incompetent and narcissistic President. He just had to find a way to screw it up while garnering some more attention for himself.

Washington Post: "The president has repeatedly misstated the number of Americans who have tested positive for the virus and claimed it would “miraculously” disappear in the spring. He has given a false timeline for the development of a vaccine, publicly questioned whether vaccinations for the flu could be used to treat the novel coronavirus and dismissed the World Health Organization’s coronavirus death rate estimate, substituting a much lower figure and citing a “hunch.”

Then, he made some inane comments about people going to work while they were sick and had to lie to cover-up his gaffe.

Washington Post: “If, you know, we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by sitting around, and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity in which he disputed the WHO fatality rate."
"On Thursday morning, Trump said his comments were misconstrued and blamed the Democrats and the media. “I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work,” he tweeted."

It's as if the President is trying to give Saturday Night Live new material. It's hilarious, but you only laugh until you remember that this combination of venality and stupidity has real life consequences for the American people.
