Intelligence Analyst Resigns After White House Blocks His Report On Climate Change

Washington has a new hero. State Department analyst Rod Schoonover has resigned after White House officials blocked his written testimony to a congressional panel that explained why climate change poses a serious national security threat. Dr. Schoonover was a Senior Analyst in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. His work at the State Department has focused on the implications of environmental change on national security.

The Trump administration has been attempting to scrub all references to climate change from US Government reports and websites, and Schoonover's report was forceful and unambiguous in laying out the consequences of not addressing the threat. He cited numerous peer-reviewed scientific journals and intelligence reports in concluding that climate change will have wide-ranging national security implications around the globe.

Washington Post: One of the statements White House officials objected to was this observation: “Absent extensive mitigating factors or events, we see few plausible future scenarios where significant — possibly catastrophic — harm does not arise from the compounded effects of climate change."

Before taking the job at the State Department, Dr. Schoonover was a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at California Polytechnic State University. He often posts updates on climate issues on his twitter page. His twitter page is here.
