Impeachment is Now the Patriotic Course of Action
It's becoming increasing clear, based on leaks from the White House and intelligence community, and the President's own statements, that Trump used a pending military aid package as leverage to force Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to work with Rudy Giuliani to dig up dirt on Joe Biden's son Hunter, hoping to damage the former Vice-President's reputation.
And we now know that it was the President who told his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, to hold back about $400 million in military aid for Ukraine a week before a phone call in which Trump asked the Ukrainian president to investigate Biden's son.
Based on what we know so far, neither Joe Biden nor his son acted illegally or improperly in the Ukraine. Even Fox News anchor Shep Smith stated that the real Ukraine scandal is not anything Joe Biden might have done: “There is no known evidence that Biden did anything wrong.” Despite the lack of evidence, however, the President has alleged wrong-doing, and now seems to be using it as a smoke screen to hide his own corruption.
Congress will attempt to get a transcript of the call this week, but the only remaining question might be how much Trump twisted Zelensky's arm; was there a specific threat to withhold the military aid or was the threat simply implied once the President blocked the funds a week before their call. In either case, the corrupt intent is difficult to miss and the only response may be impeachment.
Trump's actions in this case represent the reason there is an impeachment clause in the Constitution. He is using the powers of the Presidency [and taxpayer funds] to forcibly enlist the aid of a foreign power in undermining a political rival. Halting such corruption is Congress's duty.
