House Unveils Two Articles of Impeachment Against the President

The House of Representatives today unveiled two Articles of Impeachment against Donald Trump in response to his attempt to pressure Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelensky into digging up dirt on his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. The President is charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Washington Post: "At the heart of the Democrats’ case is the allegation that Trump tried to leverage a White House meeting and military aid, sought by Ukraine to combat Russian military aggression, to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to launch an investigation of former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, as well as a probe of an unfounded theory that Kyiv conspired with Democrats to interfere in the 2016 presidential election."

The Judiciary Committee plans to begin debating the Articles tomorrow and could vote on Thursday to recommend them to the full House for final approval. All House members would then get a chance to vote on impeachment next week, and Trump could stand trial in the Senate early in 2020.

It's only the fourth time [fifth, to be technical] in American History that the House has used the Constitution's Impeachment Clause in an attempt to remove a sitting President. President Nixon resigned prior to his impeachment by the House while Presidents Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson were acquitted in the Senate. Virginia Representative John Minor Botts presented an impeachment petition against President John Tyler in 1842 but it was quickly defeated in the House of Representatives.
