Bolton Paints a Picture of a Corrupt & Dangerously Incompetent President But Will Trumpsters Care

Former national security adviser John Bolton summed up his memoir for ABC news this way: "President Donald Trump is not "fit for office" and doesn't have "the competence to carry out the job." It took Bolton way too long to come to that conclusion, but he's finally acknowledged that his former boss is not just a moron [to quote former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson], but a danger to the republic. And, in his memoir he supplies us with a mountain of examples in addition to reaffirming that Trump committed an impeachable offense in the Ukraine affair.
The Guardian: "According to Bolton, Trump told Xi Jinping that the mass incarceration of Uighurs was “exactly the right thing to do”, and asked the Chinese leader for help getting re-elected. He said journalists should be executed. He thought it would be “cool” to invade Venezuela. He was uninterested in disarming North Korea, but obsessed for months about getting a CD of Elton John’s Rocket Man to Kim Jong-un. He thought Finland was part of Russia. He defended Saudi Arabia over the slaughter of dissident and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi as a wheeze to distract attention from a minor scandal involving his daughter Ivanka’s use of a private email account. And that are just the first scrapings from Bolton’s account."
Trump supporters will respond by labeling Bolton as part of the "deep state," and QAnon is, no doubt, concocting some elaborate conspiracy theory about the former national security adviser, cannibals and Hillary Clinton. But, protecting Trump must be getting tiresome. Almost every single individual who has left the White House paints the same picture; Trump is in way over his head and his ego and reelection drive every decision he makes.
One would like to think that Bolton's account would be the "last shoe" that needs to fall before Trumpsters finally understand the true nature of the man they idolize, but many commentators have thought so before. Trump is still hanging on to about 40% of voters, and Bolton's memoir probably won't change that much. Humans can be quite stubborn and generally don't like to admit when they have been duped. And many Trump supporters really don't seem to care much about integrity, public policy or competence; they are in it to "own the libs," the juvenile slogan of half-wits. They will show up at his reelection rallies in their red hats and QAnon t-shirts, despite concerns about spreading the virus, and cheer whatever incoherent nonsense Trump thinks up on the fly about toilets, wind turbines, or injecting disinfectants.
And such nonsense is likely to define our 2020 presidential election rather than any real debate about critical policy issues. Our choice on November 3rd will be between allowing the Trump circus to continue or returning to our senses, reestablishing our global leadership role, and living in a world where facts and science matter.
The Guardian: "In the language of the pollsters, craziness is already “baked in” when it comes to opinions about the Trump administration. The dividing line is whether Americans are horrified or enthralled by it."
The insanely scary part is that the results of the 2020 election may well be in doubt right up to the last day, even beyond, because it will have been so close. America might still reelect a man that even the MAGA folks must realize is hopelessly tainted and incompetent.
