13 Dead in Virginia Beach's Worst Mass Shooting
The death toll has increased to 13 in Virginia Beach's worst mass shooting. Police identified the gunman a few minutes ago as DeWayne Craddock, a long-time engineer with the city. At this point it is assumed that his motive was job related.
Virginia Pilot: The shooter on Friday was a current employee of the public utilities department, [Police Chief James] Cervera said. He came armed with a .45-caliber handgun with a sound suppressor on it and shot one victim in a vehicle outside before entering the building. The rest were shot inside.
The shooting occurred in a building near Virginia Beach's courthouse that houses the planning and public works departments with about 400 staff members. The attack began about 4 p.m. as city workers were packing up to leave for the weekend.
