UVA Basketball Team Turns Down White House Invitation After Winning Championship
The University of Virginia Basketball team which went 35-3 and won the 2019 NCAA Championship has turned down President Trump's offer to visit the White House. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, UVA coach Tony Bennett cited scheduling difficulties as the reason, but sophomore forward De’Andre Hunter offered another take on the team's thinking via Twitter.
Richmond Times-Dispatch: "Hunter retweeted the school’s announcement, adding the words “No Thanks Trump,” followed by two laughing emojis."
UVA joins a growing list of NCAA basketball champions that have snubbed this President's invitation.
The Hill: "The winning team typically receives an invitation to visit the White House, though last year's NCAA champion Villanova said it wouldn't be able to attend if invited."
"In 2017, the North Carolina Tar Heels said they had been invited to the White House but that they couldn't find a date to pay a visit."
