The Grammys are a Great Fashion Spectacle but an Irrelevant Music Awards Show

Criticizing the Grammy Awards is way too easy and the web is littered with "10 Worst Grammy Snubs" lists. Consider this.

The Village Voice: "Then there is the staggering list of incredible artists who’ve never won: The Band, the Beach Boys, Bjork, the Byrds, Sam Cooke, Cream, Credence Clearwater Revival, the Doors, the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Curtis Mayfield, Notorious B.I.G., Queen, the Ramones, Diana Ross, Run DMC, Sly and the Family Stone, Patti Smith, Talking Heads, 2pac and The Who."

And many others didn't win until after their prime like Neil Young, John Lennon [Solo], The Clash, Lou Reed, The Stones, Bob Dylan, and David Bowie. How is that possible? Some attribute it to the age of the judges and the influence of major record company executives. Tastes in music are extremely subjective, but their picks always seem "safe", mainstream and a bit stuffy.

For all these reasons, and probably others, the Grammy Awards have become irrelevant at influencing musical tastes. But occasionally there are some good live performances and it is a great fashion spectacle.

Here's my very subjective selection for song of the year. Hunger, Florence + The Machine. Enjoy
