HUD Secretary Ben Carson Offers Cringeworthy Kavanaugh Conspiracy Theory
Ben Carson was, by all accounts, a wonderful physician, but his knowledge and ideas regarding public policy are often a bit, shall we say, bizarre. President Trump made him HUD Secretary for reasons that nobody has ever clarified, and he has never had much interest in using his office to assist people in need of good, affordable housing. But, he has stayed out of the way, and seems less corrupt than some other cabinet members, so he is often forgotten. Every once in awhile, however, he offers a bit of commentary on the issues of the day. Yesterday he commented on the controversy surrounding Judge Kavanaugh. He has a theory.
CNN: "Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson on Friday tied the sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to a century-old plot by socialists."
"If you really understand the big picture of what's going on, then what's going on with Kavanaugh will make perfectly good sense to you," Carson said at the Values Voter Summit in Washington. "There have been people in this country for a very long time, going all the way back to the Fabians, people who've wanted to fundamentally change this country."
"Carson's mention of "Fabians" likely refers to the Fabian Society, a British socialist group founded in 1884 that is now affiliated with the United Kingdom's Labour Party, according to the society's website. Although Carson tied the allegation against Kavanaugh to members of, or those sympathetic to, the Fabian Society -- who he said "don't like what America is and what it represents" -- the group does not have a chapter in the United States."
Actually, the Fabians were never all that extreme in their views. They championed working within the political system to secure such things as a minimum wage and universal health care in the UK. They were never influential in America and, except for Ben Carson, mostly forgotten. And, what on earth they might have to do with Judge Kavanaugh's current situation is unknown.
