More than 300 publications around the country have joined together today to support a free and vibrant press in America. Its sad that anyone must remind Americans of the importance of this most sacred right and even more distressing that our President attacks this fundamental freedom so regularly. The press is not the "enemy of the people", as Trump has claimed so often recently. It is the enemy of lies, obfuscation, and deceit.
“Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.” – Thomas Jefferson
President Trump's attacks on the press appear to be working with his base of support within the Republican party. 51 percent of Republicans consider the news media the "enemy of the people" in a poll released Tuesday by Quinnipiac University. That is disheartening, but it's also dangerous to those that report the news. Journalists should not feel threatened for doing their job, they are not the enemy. They are our lifeline to the truth, especially when the truth doesn't suit the politics of those in power.
"Wherever despotism abounds, the sources of public information are the first to be brought under its control. Where ever the cause of liberty is making its way, one of its highest accomplishments is the guarantee of the freedom of the press." - Calvin Coolidge
This is a day to celebrate America's journalistic traditions, and the President's attacks on the news media should be repugnant to all Americans.
"Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter." Thomas Jefferson
