Trump Sides With Russia Over Justice Department and Intelligence Agencies at Press Conference With P
The responses to President Trump's press conference performance after his meeting with Vladimir Putin are just starting to roll in, but they are scathing, from both Republicans and Democrats. Republican Jeff Flake's Twitter post captures the tone fairly well:
Flake on Twitter: I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression. This is shameful.
Former CIA Director John Brennan was a bit more forceful:
Brennan on twitter: Donald Trump’s press conference performance in Helsinki rises to & exceeds the threshold of “high crimes & misdemeanors.” It was nothing short of treasonous. Not only were Trump’s comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. Republican Patriots: Where are you???
Trump said he didn't "see any reason why" Russia would have interfered in the 2016 election despite overwhelming evidence from his own Justice Department and US intelligence agencies. He also said Putin strongly denied interference.
Maybe this is the moment when even Trump voters say.... "I really think Putin might have some dirt on Trump." In any case, it will certainly be remembered as a day when many Americans were deeply and profoundly embarrassed by their President. And Vladimir Putin may well remember it as the day that he broke Donald Trump to his will.
