New Research Shows That There is a Backlash Against the Work of Far Right Religious Groups

Conservative religious organizations may be fueling the growing trend away from religion in America.

A new study has found that in states [generally "Red" states] where far-right religious groups have conducted high profile campaigns like ballot measures to prohibit gay marriage, there is a backlash against organized religion, especially among millennials. The research was conducted by Professors Paul A. Djupe, Jacob R. Neiheisel, and Kimberly H. Conger and was published this month in Political Research Quarterly.

In summing up their findings they say this: "Our findings suggest that Christian Right influence in state politics seems to negatively affect religion, such that religious attachments fade in the face of visible Christian Right policy victories."

And more generally, their research demonstrated that the rate at which people abandon religion is higher in states where the Christian right exerts its greatest political muscle, in most instances, conservative Republican states.
