Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is Running Again. Electing Him Would be a Terrible Idea

Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki left office after his government was unable to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq. He was also responsible for the rampant governmental corruption which hollowed out the military and undermined much needed economic reforms. But, more than anything, his close relationship with Iran and his Shiite-first public policies would lead to the rise of another Sunni-led revolt against his government. Current Prime Minister, Haider al-Abadi has his faults [his treatment of the Kurds, for instance], but he offered olive branches to Sunnis that stabilized Iraq during its war with the Islamic State. Electing Maliki again would send the worst possible message to Sunnis about their future role in the nation.

Reuters has an interesting Piece on Maliki here.
