A Yard Sale for the Ages - the Sale of Peggy and David Rockefeller's Art Collection

David Rockefeller, Jr., the last surviving grandson of Standard Oil billionaire John D. Rockefeller is auctioning off the Rockefeller family art collection In May at Christie's. The art was collected by his parents, Peggy and David Rockefeller. The collection of more than 2,000 objects is estimated to sell for more than $500 million. Some art experts think the total could reach $1 billion and it will go to fund various charities. It will be the largest sale of an individual collection in history.

The art includes:

“Water Lilies” by Claude Monet

“Odalisque Lying with Magnolias” by Henri Matisse

Picasso's "Young Girl With a Flower Basket,"

Paul Gauguin’s La Vague, 1888

And the auction will include hundreds of other treasures, including the dinner service Napoleon took with him into exile on Elba.
