Trump's Attacks on Biden Aren't Working Because Americans Know, Like & Respect Joe Biden

Trump misses Hillary Clinton and her emails. One can almost feel a touch of sympathy for the President as he tries to tar Joe Biden as a radical socialist who wants to eliminate the suburbs and, oddly, windows. Trump gathered the Washington press corp in the Rose Garden this week to lash out at Biden, desperately trying to revive his sinking campaign, but without much luck. The President's attacks on Biden were hilariously off-target and the media was quick to label most as outright and outrageous lies.

Part of Trump's problem is that he doesn't have much credibility, even about the current Covid-19 crisis.

ABC: "The president is coming up against a crisis of trust. The new ABC News/Washington Post poll out Friday morning shows 64% of Americans questioning his credibility on COVID-19, with nearly as many -- 60% -- disapproving of his handling of the pandemic."

The larger problem for Trump is that Joe Biden has been in politics for a very long time and has the track record of a moderate progressive. And, over the last 40 years or so Americans have come to recognize that he is both smart and an entirely decent human being. In 2015, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham called Biden “as good a man as God ever created.” ... “If you can’t admire Joe Biden as a person, then you got a problem,” Graham told a reporter, laughing in the back of a car. “You need to do some self-evaluation. 'Cause what’s not to like?”

And in a piece yesterday conservative columnist David Brooks, who has watched Biden for years, explained that the former Vice-President is a moderate with plans that America's blue-collar workers should rally around.

Brooks, New York Times: "His [Biden's] economic agenda, promoted under the slogan “Build Back Better,” is about that, not some vast effort to remake capitalism or build a Nordic-style welfare system. The agenda is more New Deal than New Left."
"In the two speeches he has delivered so far there are constant references to our manufacturing base — infrastructure, steelworkers, engineers, ironworkers, welders, 500,000 charging stations for electric cars. “When I think of climate change, the word I think of is jobs,” he declared."
"The agenda pushes enormous resources toward two groups: first, African-Americans, who have been pummeled by deindustrialization for decades; and second, white working-class Trump voters. This looks like an attempt to rebuild the New Deal coalition and win back the white working class who should be a core of the Democratic base. Biden’s populist “Buy American” messaging is just icing on that cake."

It would have been fairly easy for Trump to demonize Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren as radical socialists, but Joe Biden? Nope. That's simply not who he is and Americans know it. He's simply a good man with moderately progressive ideas about how we make the nation's economy work for everyone.

He is, in almost every way, the exact opposite of our current President and exactly what the nation needs right now.
