Trump Gets Poor Marks For Handling Covid-19 Crisis & His Approval Rating Slips Again

Generally Americans rally around a president during a crisis, and Donald Trump got a bump in his approval ratings as the Covid-19 outbreak began. However, that ended quickly and a new ABC News/Ipsos poll found that now just 44% of Americans approve of the way the President is handling the pandemic, down from 47% last week and 55% in mid-March. 54% disapprove of his handling of the outbreak.

Trump's slumping approval rate is probably being driven by the perception that he was slow to react to the crisis and that his public statements have been generally inaccurate.

A new Pew Research Center study found that nearly two-thirds of Americans [65%] say the President was too slow in addressing the crisis and his overall approval rating exactly mirrors the Ipsos poll with only 44% of Americans approving of his performance in office.

Trump also gets poor marks for honesty in the Pew survey. Just 39% of Americans say Trump portrays the coronavirus situation, "as it really is."

No doubt the White House is aware of this polling data, and it may well be the driving force behind the President's desire to find scapegoats like the World Health Organization to explain his late and uneven response to the crisis.
