Trump Admits That He is Trying to Stop States from Making Voting Safer for Americans

Yesterday Donald Trump admitted that he opposes election aid for states and additional funding for the U.S. Postal Service because he wants to limit voting by mail and force Americans to stand in line at the polls on November 3rd.

Reuters, Trump on Fox: “The items are the post office and the $3.5 billion for mail-in voting,” Trump told Fox Business Network, saying Democrats want to give the post office $25 billion. “If we don’t make the deal, that means they can’t have the money, that means they can’t have universal mail-in voting.”

States are seeking aid to ramp up vote by mail initiatives to ensure that casting a ballot during the Covid-19 pandemic won't be a life threatening proposition. Older Americans are especially concerned about the prospect of standing in lines at polling places during the pandemic.

Washington Post: "Trump has been attacking mail balloting and the integrity of the vote for months, but his latest broadside makes explicit his intent to stand in the way of urgently needed money to help state and local officials administer elections during the coronavirus pandemic. With nearly 180 million Americans eligible to vote by mail, the president’s actions could usher in widespread delays, long lines and voter disenfranchisement this fall, voting rights advocates said."

Trump's attacks on the integrity of ballots placed in the mail is a lie with no basis in fact and many Republicans have admitted it.

Washington Post: "Tom Ridge, a Republican and former homeland security secretary under George W. Bush, said in an interview that with “absolutely no historical anecdotes” for the type of massive fraud that Trump claims could occur, it’s impossible not to conclude that the president’s real concern is losing.
“To subvert the process and discredit the use of absentee ballots is a shameful exercise,” Ridge said."

But, for whatever reason, Trump is dead-set on preventing states from making this election safer for voters. The President admitted yesterday that he cares more about his reelection than the health and welfare of the American people.

Post Script: On Wednesday, according to election officials, Trump requested an absentee ballot so he can vote by mail in Florida's upcoming primary election.
