Klobuchar Endorsements, Black Voters' Verdict on Trump, and Stop Using Soybean Oil

Happy MLK Day! As Donald Trump's Senate impeachment trial approaches, this promises to be an interesting and chaotic week in Washington, but there is a lot of other news on this Monday holiday.

1. Klobuchar Endorsements: Amy Klobuchar received two key presidential endorsements over the weekend. First she won the support of Iowa's Quad City Times:

Quad City Times: "She won our endorsement by convincing us that, among her rivals, in this divided political culture, she is the best person to push through an agenda that will better the lives of millions of Americans, including those of us who live in eastern Iowa and western Illinois."

And, on Sunday, Klobuchar was co-endorsed, along with Elizabeth Warren, by the New York Times. The Times was persuaded by her ability to enact bipartisan legislation and her mission to unite, rather than divide, the nation

New York Times: "Good news, then, that Amy Klobuchar has emerged as a standard-bearer for the Democratic center. Her vision goes beyond the incremental. Given the polarization in Washington and beyond, the best chance to enact many progressive plans could be under a Klobuchar administration."
"The senator from Minnesota is the very definition of Midwestern charisma, grit and sticktoitiveness. Her lengthy tenure in the Senate and bipartisan credentials would make her a deal maker (a real one) and uniter for the wings of the party — and perhaps the nation."

The Times also had much good to say about Warren, specifically about her bold ideas to address income inequality and her tenure at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an institution that President Trump has done everything in his power to undermine.

2. More than 80% of Black Voters Think Trump is a Racist: According to a new Ipsos-Washington Post poll, 83% of blacks think that Donald Trump is a racist. Additionally, the poll determined that 90% of African Americans disapprove of his job performance as president [75% strongly disapprove], with only 7% approving of his actions and policies.

The poll, of course, doesn't prove that the President is a racist, but it certainly says volumes about how he is perceived by a large segment of the population.

3. Soybean Oil is Really Bad for You: Soybean oil is inexpensive and, by far, the most consumed food oil in the United States. It's used for frying fast-foods, added to some packaged foods, and fed to livestock. However, recent research has found that's it's not very good for us.

Past studies have shown that soybean oil, which is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, contributes to the high rate of obesity and diabetes among Americans. New research conducted at UC Riverside suggests it could also negatively impact neurological conditions like autism, Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, and depression

News.UCRiverside: "The research team discovered roughly 100 other genes also affected by the soybean oil diet. They believe this discovery could have ramifications not just for energy metabolism, but also for proper brain function and diseases such as autism or Parkinson’s disease."

Three caveats; the research was done with mice, so human studies will be needed in the future, they aren't saying that soybean oil causes these diseases, just that it might contribute to them, and other soy products, like tofu and soymilk, are fine [and often healthy] because they only have trace amounts of the oil in them.

But, until more is known, researchers believe Americans should make a conscience effort to consume less soybean oil.
