Biden Defines the Stakes: Reject the Fear, Anger & Division of the Trump Years & Return to the Light

Joe Biden has never been known as an accomplished public speaker, but last night he drew on a reservoir of strength, vision and clarity to give the best speech of his life, perfectly capturing this moment in American history and the stakes in the November election.

Biden, New York Times: “The current president has cloaked America in darkness for much too long — too much anger, too much fear, too much division,” Mr. Biden said. “Here and now, I give you my word: If you entrust me with the presidency, I will draw on the best of us, not the worst. I will be an ally of the light, not the darkness.”

Our Presidential elections are often about character and trust rather than specific issues; who we trust to carry the heavy mantel of leadership, especially during a crisis like the current pandemic. Trump's botched coronavirus response and his lack of compassion toward the victims undermines his argument for reelection, as has been reflected in recent polling.

However, voters will also weigh diametrically opposing visions of America's future. Joe Biden embraces America's growing diversity and its leadership role in the global community. Donald Trump represents those that resent the rise of women, the LGBT community, immigrants, and people of color, and want to withdraw from the world stage.

Joe Biden captured that choice last night.

Biden, New York Times: “This,” Mr. Biden said, “is a life-changing election. This will determine what America’s going to look like for a long, long time.”

The Republican Convention will kick off next week and Donald Trump will try to reframe the narrative and convince Americans to overlook his mistakes during the pandemic. He will focus on the fears that motivated his voters in 2016. Expect lots of talk about Antifa, socialism and vicious immigrants. And, if you work as a fact-checker, expect a lot of overtime.
