John McCain Admits Iraq War Was a Mistake and Accepts Responsibility

Senator John McCain will be remembered favorably by history because of his integrity and his efforts to unite Americans around policies meant to solve problems on a bipartisan basis such as campaign finance reform and immigration reform. But he was also one of the most steadfast support's of President George W. Bush's disastrous invasion of Iraq and the subsequent "surge," later in the conflict. Unlike Cheney, Bolton, Bush, and other neocons however, he now understands that the Iraq war was the spark that ignited Sunni extremism and strengthened Iran's influence in the region.

In his new memoir, "The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights and Other Appreciations", McCain admits his error and accepts responsibility. He writes that Iraq “can’t be judged as anything other than a mistake, a very serious one, and I have to accept my share of the blame for it.” Its a bold admission, but he is a courageous man, something we are in very short supply of in Washington right now.

Politico has an excellent review of Senator McCain's book and career here.
